DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RECYCLING, REUSING, REPURPOSING AND RECYCLING – DIFERENCIAS ENTRE RECICLAR, REUTILIZAR Y UPCYCLING
These words have in common:
“to take an object for reuse rather than discarding it to trash”.
To see the differences, lets use a sample:
If we buy a plastic bottle in a supermarket, and then, later, we reuse it and refill it with water, and we use it several times. The bottle will be reused, and in a way, We will Plastic bottles. Recycling, repurposing, reusing, upcycling, downcyclingrecycle it. The purpose didn’t change, and the value of the bottle will remain the same.
If we discard it to trash, the bottle will be sent out for recycling to a recycling plant where it will be turned into something new, such as more new plastic bottles. The bottle will be recycled, but probably, it will also be downcycled (the process of converting waste items into new materials or products of lesser quality and reduced functionality).
If we decide to use the bottle for another purpose, like gardening, it will be reused, repurposed an recycled. We cannot say if the value remains the same or not, it depends on the object.
But, if we decide to transform it into something of greater use and value, the bottle will be reused, repurposed, recycled and we will upcycle it. Upcycling encourages people to be creative and think of innovative ways to reuse things instead of buying new consumer goods. It is the opposite of consumer culture.

Estas palabras tienen una complicada traducción en castellano recycling, reusing, repurposing and upcycling. Reciclar, reutilizar, upcycling… tienen en común:
“tomar un objeto para su reutilización en lugar de desecharlo a la basura”.
Para ver las diferencias, vamos a utilizar un ejemplo:
Si compramos una botella de agua de plástico en un supermercado, y cuando se acaba el contenido la rellenamos para volver a utilizarla y la volvemos a rellenar en varias ocasiones. La botella será reutilizada, y de algún modo, también la estaremos reciclando. El propósito no cambia, y el valor de la botella seguirá siendo el mismo.
Si la tiramos a la basura, ésta será enviada una planta de reciclaje donde junto con otras botellas, se convertirá en algo nuevo, como por ejemplo otra botella de plástico. Ésta se puede reciclar, pero probablemente, también se “downcycled” (el proceso de convertir los elementos de desecho en nuevos materiales o productos de menor Plastic bottles. Si decidimos utilizar la botella para otros fines, como una maceta de jardinería, podemos decir que será reciclada y reutilizada, no sólo para el propósito inicial de contener líquidos, sino para otro diferente. No podemos asegurar si el valor sigue siendo el mismo o no, depende del objeto.
Pero, si decidimos a transformarla en algo innovador, diferente, creativo y de un uso superior. La botella será reciclada, reutilizada y utilizada para otros propósitos, además la convertiremos en un producto de mejor calidad y/o nuevas funcionalidades. Haremos lo que dicen en inglés “upcycling” . La botella que iba a ser desechada, se convierte en un producto de mejor calidad y/o nuevas funcionalidades, y se incrementará el valor,tanto estética como económicamente .
anima a la gente a ser creativo y pensar en formas innovadoras de reutilizar las cosas en lugar de comprar nuevos bienes de consumo. Es lo contrario de la cultura de consumo.
